Scanlab Projects: framerate, pulse of the earth

FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth

We are really excited to see the ScanLAB projects team installing the equipment ready for opening at the weekend.

Created from thousands of daily 3D time-lapse scans of British landscapes, the work observes change on a scale impossible to see with the lens of traditional cameras.

The tour

To date, FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth has been exhibited at: COP26 (in preview form); SXSW; Venice Biennale; BFI London Film Festival; Centre PHI in Montreal;; Taiwan Creative Content Festival; Elektron in Luxembourg, and Tribeca Festival at Mercer Labs in New York City.

We are excited to be bringing FRAMERATE: Pulse of the Earth to a Cromer audiences, particularly to a region in which the project was created, with support from Arts Council England.

FRAMERATE began with a period of long-term scanning in Norfolk with local photographers Paul Macro and Brad Damms. They worked with the council to select and access special heritage sites in the area, including Happisburgh Beach, Felbrigg Manor, and Sidestrand Beach. These Norfolk landscapes are the core of the work that has gone on to inspire audiences worldwide; now, the show at Cromer Artspace will give the local community a chance to see their area foregrounded in this world-class artwork.

Alongside the tour, there will be a series of participatory workshops in collaboration with local arts organisations, with the aim of democratising access to 3D scanning and facilitating artists and those with an interest in environmental and data science to explore it in their own practice.
