Norfolk & Norwich Festival – RNLI 200th Anniversary
See Like A Mirror
Kate Munro presents a new body of work created with and by the young people of Cromer as part of nationwide project Sea Like a Mirror, celebrating the 200th anniversary of the RNLI. The exhibition reflects the young people’s response to core themes of the project, including land and water, past and present, and the liminal space of the coastline.
The exhibition compliments the other elements of the project, White Horses by Ivan Morrison and a performance piece by a local artist, whose announcement will be in early 2025. You can find out more about these at Norfolk & Norwich Festival website.
See Like A Mirror has been jointly commissioned by Cement Fields, Art Gene, the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, North-East Lincolnshire Council and East March United, and Super Culture, and combines sculpture, film and music, telling stories of the RNLI’s lifesaving work over two centuries. It is on tour to six lifeboat station towns across England: Whitstable, Cromer, Barrow-in-Furness, Weston-super-Mare, Cleethorpes, and Gravesend.
At its heart is White Horses by Ivan Morison, a multifaceted portrait of the sea and our coastal towns. “There is an eccentric tradition in Britain of the artist/writer/filmmaker’s coastal tour, to see what they see and reflect back to those that live there” said Morison. “There are people that live their lives in close connection to the sea, drawn to fish, to travel upon it, to immerse themselves in it, to search beneath it, to harness its power, to care for people in danger because of it. I am fascinated by these people and will spend my tour searching them out”.
In each setting White Horses will be accompanied by a series of projects by local artists in collaboration with the area’s community.
