Julie Oxenforth is an artist from Scunthorpe who is now based in Bridlington on the East Yorkshire coast. She creates immersive sculptural installations that aim to energise and expand space. Objects, colours and materials are selected intuitively and suggest ambiguous narratives.

The title Into the Blue Black is taken from a poem she wrote about the five elements in Taoist philosophy – wood, fire, earth, metal and water, which represent fundamental qualities that have both creative and destructive relationships within the natural world. This seemed a felicitous title because since her relocation she has spent a lot of time in the sea as well as practicing Tai Chi, and is curious to discover how this immersion in the elements has influenced her creative practice. It has become softer, like fire twisting metal, stone smoothed by sea, wind bending a tree. Into the Blue Black serves as a metaphor for diving into the unknown and a shift of consciousness.
