Event Details
Karen Taylor, Collections & Exhibitions Curator at Towner Eastbourne, returns to Cromer in June to share the remarkable story of Lucy Wertheim — art patron, gallery owner and champion of many of the artists featured in this year’s Bigger Picture exhibition. Karen contributed to the recent re‑publication of Wertheim’s autobiography Adventures in Art, offering fresh insight into a woman whose passion for supporting young artists helped shape British Modernism.
Wertheim’s impact was extraordinary: she gifted more than 500 works to regional, national and international museums, ensuring that the artists she believed in were seen, researched and remembered. Her motivation never wavered — “to do all I can to provide an opportunity for artists to gain recognition while they are still fairly young and certainly before their death when the vultures descend.”
This promises to be a fascinating and inspiring talk, shining a light on a visionary whose generosity still resonates today.
