Graham High

As a graduate from Leeds University Fine Art Department Graham was already engaged in sculpture as well as with painting and with writing. He has pursued this commitment to a multi-disciplinary approach to life and to art ever since. This show at Cromer Artspace exhibits a selection of earlier figurative bronzes, concentrating on his animal-based sculpture. Next to this there is a selection of his more recent abstract, ‘biomorphic’ sculpture.

Through a busy creative life as a professional artist Graham has also used his professional skills in the service of Museums, especially as scientific model-maker/3D designer at the Natural History Museum, London, where he worked for eight years. Later, his work also began to be appreciated by the feature film industry and from 1980 to 2007 he followed a high profile career in film, working as an Animatronic Model Designer and sculptor. Graham has worked on the live action FX of over 40 films including ‘Aliens’, ‘Babe’, ‘Willow’, ‘The English Patient’, ‘101 Dalmations’, ‘Labyrinth’ and the ‘Harry Potter’ series. He was frequently a part of a team which were awarded OSCARs, EMMYs etc and he received a personal BAFTA in 2001.

Just as Graham’s multi-disciplinary skills have been used by the film industry, some of his film experiences have fed back into his art practice. His recent sculpture focuses on a return to an early interest in biomorphic forms. Some people have seen some two-way influence from the films he has worked on (‘Aliens’ ‘The Fly’ etc in the biomorphic work; and ‘Babe’, ‘101 Dalmatians’, and ‘Animal Farm’ for the animal sculpture)
