Conversations on The Bigger Picture
Event Details
In conjunction with the Cromer Society, we are pleased to present a range of talks inspired by the Bigger picture exhibition.
Each talk will look at different aspects of the pictures and encourage the audience to think about and look at art in different ways. The talks include
- Ellie Baker with an insight into the artworks from the National Galleries of Scotland
This talk will provide an overview of the current exhibition of pictures from the National Galleries of Scotland. We selected traditional, challenging and joyous images which together represent the work of twenty artists who were working between 1795 and 1932, covering a range of approaches and movements. Of particular focus will be the styles and influences of the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau and the Celtic Revival.
- Chris Emery, Collision, Encounter and meditation: viewing art from a poet’s perspective
This talk invites audiences to see art through the eyes of a poet. Drawing on three stages of looking — collision, encounter and meditation — it explores how paintings disrupt our experience, connect us across time, and invite us into a deeper practice of attention. Rather than offering explanations, it encourages slow looking and creative response, asking viewers not only to reflect on what they see, but to carry the experience outward by making something of their own.
- Eddie Anderson, how Landseer has influenced his life
The talk will largely hover around the 2 pictures by Landseer. This includes a film Eddie made years ago in the National Gallery, of printing an early engraving (to coincide with a huge Landseer exhibition in 1984).
and Landseer’s influence on Victorian society etc, and Eddie’s life too. In addition. The talk will reflect on the overall value of the pictures in town to all who see them, and with mention of the way we have used earlier pictures in the woods here at Templewood, and the effect they have on the audience.
- Sarah Ballard, an informal talk about how the art has been interpreted by the Barrington Farm art team
- Chris Bailkoski, a look behind Francis Picabia’s Sotileza
Francis Picabia was a French avant-garde artist, notorious for his stylistic shifts during modernism including Impressionism, Dada and Surrealism. His ‘transparency’ paintings, like Sotileza (1928), merge multiple images into a single, layered artwork. Picabia created these works as a reaction against Dadaism and Surrealism. Through his frustration, he sought a new, poetic way of working, drawing inspiration from Old Master paintings, mythological themes, and painting techniques such as glazing. The overlapping, translucent figures in Sotileza explore the transparency of both personal and cultural memory and identity.
- Maria Pavledis, focussing on female print makers
A talk which will explore some of the many fascinating printmaking processes including etching, screen print, lithography and letterpress and the artists and artists groups who have used them from Queen Victoria to Corita Kent and Paula Rego. As well as looking at work, attendees can learn a little about the different print techniques and get a flavour of each process.
