This work is the first of three designed and lithographed by Barnett Freedman from a print series commissioned by Lyons teashops following the Second World War. Freedman was well acquainted with many artists, printers and discerning patrons through his years at the Royal College of Art and time spent as a war artist. He became a close friend of Jack Beddington who directed the post war scheme to enliven the teashops and people’s homes (as prints were available to purchase). Freedman was a skilled lithographer and became responsible for overseeing the production of all forty Lyons prints working with Frank Oppenheimer, the managing director of Chromoworks (a British printing company). The subtle tonality of colours and clear lines of the print show his technical mastery of lithography.
