Twenty paintings formed the original Towner Bequest in 1920, of which this is one. They are primarily Victorian narrative scenes, set in domestic settings and rural landscapes. At the time of the bequest, this particular work was considered to be far more adventurous than the others gifted – the bold composition, bright colours and loose brushwork suggest Lloyd’s interest in plein-air painting. Lloyd was a talented painter of landscapes and marine subjects and this view is on the cliff top at Luccombe, south of Shanklin, Isle of Wight where Lloyd painted several scenes. It looks north-east across Sandown Bay towards the chalk headland of Culver cliff.
