Christopher Wood was a prolific but little known artist during his short lifetime who became a great friend of gallery owner, artistic patron and founder of the contemporary ‘Twenties Group’ Lucy Wertheim. Wertheim purchased and exhibited much of his work in her Burlington Gardens gallery. Wood was born in Liverpool, studied at the Academie Julian in Paris and was greatly influenced by the work and style of Alfred Wallis who he had met in St. Ives.
Girl on a chair, also known as Girl for a Screen, is similar to other works he produced at about this time and was part of a collection bequeathed by Lucy Wertheim in 1971 to Towner Eastbourne.
