Stanislawa de Karlowska was born in Poland studying in Warsaw and the Academie Julian, Paris before settling in England in 1898 with her husband, the British artist Robert Bevan. Stanislawa exhibited with the all male Camden group and in 1914 was a founder member of the London group. Throughout her career she depicted broadly representational and beautiful scenes with flattened picture planes, bold compositions, contrasting colours and stylised figures, combined with elements of Polish folk art. This work might be unrecognisable as war time were it not for the barrage balloons and the crossed tape on the windows, giving it a sense of unease.
