Cromer Society Lectures – from Great Bardfield to Saffron Walden

In conjunction with the Cromer Society, we are pleased to present a range of talks inspired by the Bigger picture exhibition.

Each talk will look at different aspects of the pictures and encourage the audience to think about and look at art in different ways.

The last talk is by Philip Neale from the Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden.

Art and Design in the Essex Countryside, from Great Bardfield to Saffron Walden

Phil Neale, trustee of the Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden will speak on the Great Bardfield group, a community of artists established in an Essex village in the 1930s.  The group included many notable artists and the Fry gallery was opened in 1987 largely to honour them. The Cromer artspace Bigger Picture exhibition in 2026 in collaboration with Towner Eastbourne will feature 2 of the most famous of this group – Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious
