Learning To Look: Poetry Workshop
with James McDermott

Event Details

In James McDermott poetry workshop, participants will learn tools and techniques on learning to really look at subject matter in order to write effectively and evocatively about it.

To coincide with Malca Schotten’s exhibition inspired by her time observing visitors at The Sainsbury Centre in her role as a gallery invigilator, James McDermott runs a poetry workshop in which participants will learn tools and techniques on learning to really look at subject matter in order to write effectively and evocatively about it. The workshop will be followed by a poetry reading in the gallery in which workshop participants can share their writing with an audience.

The workshop is led by local writer James McDermott. His poetry collections include ‘Wild Life’ (Nine Arches; shortlisted for The East Anglian Book Awards 2024), ‘Manatomy’ (Burning Eye Books; long-listed for Polari’s First Book Prize 2021) and ‘Erased’ (Polari Press). Plays published by Samuel French include ‘Jab’ (Finborough Theatre; nominated for an Off West End Theatre Award for Best New Play 2024), ‘Time & Tide’ (Park Theatre/tour; nominated for an Off West End Theatre Award for Best New Play 2020) and ‘Rubber Ring’ (Pleasance Islington/UK Tour). James is an Arvon writing tutor and lecturer in creative writing at The University of East Anglian.
