A playful 2 day workshop, exploring working with plaster both casting and carving responding to the architectural landscape. Explore positive and negative space, introduction to artists that have worked with these processes.
Work collaboratively to create a group art work that will be shown as part of the Sculpture Exhibition.
9.30- 2.30 each day

Day 1:
Participants will explore the idea of mass and void – creating abstract sculptural forms playing with positive and negative space. Participants will respond to shape and texture of the immediate architectural landscape surrounding Artspace on the Prom.
Introduction to artists using carving and casting – e.g. Rachel Whiteread/ Josceleyn Chewitt/ Eduardo Chilida / Henry Moore/ Barbara Hepworth
Visual research walk exploring coastal architecture – Using photography / viewfinders and drawing to identify shapes and forms
Demo creating the cast -participants will then translate these through building up shapes inside a cube or cylindrical vessel.
Pour casts (either over lunch or at end of the day depending on how they get on
Day 2:
Reveal casts, removing items cast with.
Further carving of blocks
Create a collaborative sculpture combining the individual blocks to create one or more sculptures.
Explore stacking / presenting on different height plinths / finding connections between different participants sculpture.
Use architectural model figures to imagine the sculptural maquettes as larger scale.
Use dramatic lighting to create light and shadow
Incorporate mirrors /coloured lights
Make photographs
Make largescale charcoal drawings from the sculptures.
Hannelore Smith
Hannelore Smith is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator based in North Norfolk, whose diverse creative practice spans textile design, fine art, and educational leadership.
As an Associate Artist for the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich, she has worked on a range of collaborative educational projects, encouraging public engagement with museum collections. She has also partnered with galleries, museums, festivals and cultural organisations across the UK, designing and delivering bespoke creative projects that promote engagement with the arts.
